Scarborough Renaissance Festival - May 2012

The Scarborough Renaissance Faire which began in 1981 is an annual festival that runs for 8 consecutive weekends and Memorial Day Monday each Spring in the town of Waxahachie, Texas. It is a Renaissance-themed festival based on the year 1533, during the reign of England’s King Henry VIII.

The 'village' is built up within a 167 acre site, and you can find costumed patrons, 'residents' and characters in the fashions of that Medieval period. The 'villagers' even speak with the accents and the language of that time! I love it!!

There are 21 stages for entertainment, and 3 full combat jousts taking place each day! Daily falconry demonstrations are also performed.

The shops feature unique hand-fashioned craft items, made from scratch by artisans from around the country. Demonstrations are also available at different times throughout the day in candle making, glassblowing, blacksmithing, leather crafting, coin minting, printing on a Guttenberg Press, broom making, etc

The people of long ago made sure to eat heartily, as the more robust you were, the richer you were considered, since you could afford to eat aplenty! The food that is served at this festival are the traditional large sized portions of beef ribs, turkey legs, pork ribs, etc. Non-traditional foods such as hand made pastas, seafood, stir fry, steak-on-a-stick, Scott's eggs, Italian Ice, etouffee (Cajun seafood stew), empanadas, fajitas, meatball sandwiches, baklava (Turkish sweet pastry), quiche and pastries ye can also find!

For drinks, well ye olde pubs and taverns serve up extra, extra large mugs of ales, a variety of beers, wine, mead (an alcoholic wine made from honey), and frozen drinks.

There are special programs where students can visit and learn some history, as well as appreciate it in full since it is being re-enacted. You can also have your wedding here and really can marry a knight in shining armor!!

This was my first time attending this event, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Check out the video for the footage I captured.

TifftheZETA and Mz. Mandi's ColorBlock Party - May 2012

OMGosh! I got to the event late and totally missed the fashion presentation!!! On April 30th, I worked with Nicholas Moore - one of the designers who is also a singer, on his photoshoot in preparation for this event.

If you refer to my article BLiNk Couture Fashion Photoshoot, you will see the footage. When I got there and walked through the door, I was just in time to hear, "And that was BLiNk Couture by Nicholas J. Moore!" - and his presentation was the last of all!!

There was more entertainment after the fashion presentations, and I was able to capture Nicholas doing his thing on the mic and literally wearing it out, because I don't think it worked properly after that! LOL!

Let me tell you, the child can more than carry a tune! Voice is as powerful as a sonic bOOm!

Check it out!
Enjoy! video

Idealist Even Skintone Illuminator- Estēe Lauder

As an Essence Insider, I was sent this to test a while back before it went on the market. I received a full size bottle to try. This is the 1.7FL oz.

I used the product as directed - which is to apply twice daily to affected area(s) after cleansing skin and before moisturizer is applied. I did this for one week.

Puffiness reduced after 7 days. Some discoloration gone.

This is what it looks like. This amount is enough to use on your entire face!

You only need to use a small amount per application (thank goodness), considering the fact that it ranges from $80 - $140 depending on which size and where you are buying it!!

You can find Idealist Even Skintone Illuminator online at EstēeLauder, or where ever Estēe Lauder products are sold.

Taste Addison - 2012 "We've Got Flavor"!

The annual food festival Taste Addison, hosted at Addison Circle in the North Dallas town of Addison offered a tasty weekend blend of food, fashion, arts and craft, music, and family fun. It was held over a 3-day period May 18th - May 20th. This festival features over 60 Addison and environs restaurants serving up Texas-sized samplings of their menus at reduced prices. Live-band musical entertainment, flair bartending exhibitions, celebrity chef demonstrations, wine tasting seminars, and amusement park rides and games were some of the other attractions.

There is also a cooking competition held, where the participating restaurants prepare special menu items for the people to taste and judge by voting! Last year's Grand Prize Winner was Chamberlain's Steak & Chop House, and the 2011 People's Choice Winner went to The Italian Club of Dallas. This competition goes on for the month of May. Winners are announced thereafter.

The aroma of different sauces and seasonings filled the air as food was being prepared on the spot.

On the first day, the festivities began at 6pm and continued  until 12midnight. On Saturday from 12noon - 12midnight, and Sunday from 12noon - 5pm. Admission ranged from $5 - $15 depending on the day and time that you decide to attend.

It wasn't just only about food though. Other businesses participated which included Flight Museum(War Aircraft) Tours/Rides, Salons/Beauty Schools, Natural Cosmetics , Jewelry, Clothing and Arts and Crafts vendors; Energy Corporations, and The Dallas Mavs tour bus filled with fan gear and apparel. It was like an outside mall where you could shop for everything including applying for your passport!

As a Makeup Artist and a person who loves art, fashion and beauty, I will find them everywhere, and at this festival, there was no shortage! I was very impressed with this fabulous body art piece done by Brianna Meshack Wilks of the Salon Boutique Academy

My look for the day.

I had a great time! If you missed it this time around, mark your calendar for 2013!

Visit for next year's dates, and a list of other events showcased annually.

Products Of The Month - May 2012

Hey folks, today I bring to you my choices for Products Of The Month of May. I recently purchased these two items, and have been loving them.

Sleek and Shine Intensely Smooth Leave-In Conditioning Cream is a water-based leave-in conditioner, that instantly moisturizes your hair, and keeps it feeling soft and sleek for at least two days after.  I had seen this product before, but since I was already using another brand, I decided I would wait until what I had was finished, and then try this one. I am glad that I did because I absolutely love it. It has a very fruity smell - kinda like ripe guavas - YUMM!! I absolutely love it. It is available at most pharmacies, supermarkets, Targets, Walmarts, or wherever Garnier Fructis products are sold. Price range $2.60 - $3.60

Ingredients: Aqua/Water/Eau, Cetaryl Alcohol, Amodimethicone, Cetyl Esters, Behentrimonium Chloride, Parfum/Fragrance, Pyrus Malus Extrace/Apple Fruit Extract, Isopropyl Alcohol, Trideceth-6 Argania Spinosa Oil/Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil, Niacinamide, Pyrodoxine HCI, Prunus Armeniaca Kernel Oil/Apricot Kernel Oil, Citric Acid, Saccharum Officnarium Extract/Sugar Cane Extract/Extrait De Canne A Sucre, Hexyl Cinnamal, Chlorhexdine Dihydrochloride, Cetrimonium Chloride, Benyl Alcohol, Linalool, Amyl Cinnamal, CI 19140/Yellow 5, Citrus Medica Limonum Peel Extract/Lemon Peel Extract, CI 15985/Yellow 6, Camellia Sinensis Extract/Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, F.I.L. D50344/1

Fox In A Box by Hardy Candy. This is the blush from this brand which is sold exclusively at Walmart. This combo is called Hot Flash. The colors are very pigmented and last all day. Swirling your brush onto the four colors at once, blends the highlighters and contour colors to give the perfect mix for your cheeks. I find  myself reaching for this blush more than the others that I have when I do my makeup.

Of course you can also use these as eye shadows as well, or get creative, mix with a mixing medium and use on your lips. The brush that comes with it, well that is going to stay there and decorate the box. It's a bit too flimsy for my taste, so I won't be using it. LOL!

Price - about $6.

Carolina Herrera For The North Texas Thyroid Awareness Foundation

This event was held at Social 121, Frisco, Texas. It was a charitable one which benefited the North Texas Thyroid Awareness Foundation founded by NaKisha Ortiz.

Attendees were treated to a sneak peak of the Carolina Herrera CH Spring/Summer - 2012 collection, followed by a shopping event at the Carolina Herrera Boutique at North Park Mall, Dallas.

At the shopping event which was held two days later (May 12th), patrons were able to view the full collection, enjoy tasty gourmet hors d'oeuvres, as well get 10% off of their purchases! Part proceeds were donated to the NTTAF.

Thyroid disease is a medical condition that can hinder the proper functioning of the thyroid gland. Hypothyroidism (under-activity), and hyperthyroidism (over-activity), can result in several different impairments of the thyroid gland.

You can do a self-test to examine your thyroid, but it is ALWAYS recommended that you see a doctor for a proper diagnosis.

Here's how to quickly examine your thyroid:

  1. Hold the mirror so that you can see the area of your neck just below the Adam's apple and right above the collarbone. This is the general location of your thyroid gland.
  2. Tip your head back, while keeping this view of your neck and thyroid area in your mirror.
  3. Take a drink of water and swallow. As you swallow, look at your neck. Watch carefully for any bulges, enlargement, protrusions, or unusual appearances in this area when you swallow.
  4. Repeat this process several times. If you see any bulges, protrusions, lumps or anything that appears unusual, see your doctor right away. You may have an enlarged thyroid, or a thyroid nodule, and your thyroid should be evaluated.

Important: Do not confuse your Adam's apple with your thyroid gland. The Adam's Apple is at the front of your neck, the thyroid is further down, and closer to your collarbone.

Check out the footage from the first half of the event....

What's In There - How To Read Ingredients In Hair Products

Knowing what products to purchase to take care of your hair can be a hassle sometimes especially with so many different brands on the market. Choosing the right product for your hair type is important to ensure that it helps to maintain your hair's strength and healthiness as it grows. Hair products are necessary since we need to keep our crowning glories looking in tip-top shape.

The elements of the environment such as chlorine, sun, wind, dust, etc can be harsh on hair especially if we have processed it by the use of colors, relaxers, perms, and the use of hot tools for styling. Hair is made up mostly of keratin protein and each time we process with chemicals and hot tools, we deplete some of that protein, which if not taken care of will continue to deplete over time, become very damaged and eventually fall off. Regardless of hair type, hair needs to retain a balance of protein and moisture in order to stay healthy.

In this article I wish to share with you the ingredients found in moisture-based and protein-based hair care products.

A moisture-based moisturizer/deep conditioner/regular conditioner has these ingredients in high concentration:

Alpha hydroxy acids

Aqua (Water)

Cetearyl alcohol

Glyceryl triacetate

Oleic acid

Palmitic acid

Propylene glycol

Pyrrolidine carboxylic Acid

Sodium PCA

Stearic acid

Stearyl alcohol

Protein-based hair products contain:

Amino acids (various, e.g. silk, hydrolyzed)

Animal protein (e.g. lanolin)

Milk protein

Panthenol - ALL Pantene products have this in them. This is where they got the name Pantene from :)

Plant protein (coconut oil, olive oil, argan oil, etc)

Soy protein

Wheat protein

(If you see hydrolyzed in front of the word, or amino acid after the word - it is a protein ingredient)

Any product that says it is volumizing, thick growth, etc and gels usually contain hydrolyzed proteins.

NOTE: ALL MOISTURE-BASED PRODUCTS WILL HAVE SOME PROTEINS IN THEM, AS WELL AS PROTEIN-BASED WILL HAVE MOISTURE IN THEM. To know how concentrated the ingredient is in the product - it will usually appear as one of the first five listed ingredients. This will let you know if the product is protein or moisture based. Now, you should also read carefully, because some manufacturers list their ingredients in alphabetical order. If this is the case, just look at the list and see how many times you see a protein or how many times you see a moisture ingredient. If you see about 3 or 4 protein ingredients, then it is a............protein product, and vice versa as regards the moisture based ones.

Video Inspiration: Anthony B - Mr. Heartless

Anthony B has always been and will always be one of my favorite performers and lyricists. His content and delivery are always so powerfully uplifting and addresses many issues that are real in the world, but people like to pretend that they don't exist.

This is one of my favs from him. If you can understand Jamaican patois: (pronounced pat-wha) - this is Jamaican dialect; please do enjoy. Even if you don't quite understand the lyrics, the music and the visuals will get the point across.

Due to audio copyright, this video is not available for viewing on a mobile device.

What Do You Use On Your Skin?

Hey ya'll!!

Recently I have changed my skin care products. I have come to realize that it is something that I have to do every year or two years. My skin type is normal to dry, my pores are tiny and very close together, so that gives my skin a smooth appearance. Acne CANNOT hide on my face. Previously I had been using Aveeno's Smart Essentials, and the line was working great until recently. The moisturizing night cream still seems to be working though, but the facial wash, well not so much.

I had heard of Cetaphil before and even used the body wash many years ago, but I never tried the skin care line. I am no product junkie, so I waited until what I was using to be done and then I decided to give the Cetaphil a try. It was a toss up between Cetaphil and Simple. I am glad that I chose the Cetaphil because I love the way it is working for my skin. The facial wash rinses clean, and doesn't leave the skin feeling tight or itchy.  The daily moisturizer which has an spf (sun protecting factor) of 15 is light but thoroughly moisturizes my face. I use Witch Hazel and/or Equate's Astringent sometimes after I wash my face, and before I apply my moisturizer.

This little gadget from Olay helps me gently exfoliate my skin better than I would with my own hands. It does work really well, and you can also use it on your neck, underarms, and body. It comes with a sample size of the Olay facial scrub (haven't used it yet). I recommend that the you use a separate brush head to the one that you use for your face if you intend to use it on the rest of your body. The brush heads are replaceable, and are super easy to install and use.

Price ranges from $23.95 - $29.99

All items are available at Walmart, Target, CVS, Ulta, Walgreen's etc, and even on-line. The Equate is Walmart's brand, so you will only find it there.

Good skin is NEVER out of style...

Keep Your Make-Up Fresh Looking For Hours

Tips on how to keep your make-up looking fresh and flawless for hours after it's been applied:

1. Do use a face primer. Face primers add minimal moisture whilst acting as a 'second skin'. Since the primer is applied to the skin first, this gives the makeup something '' to hold on to. This is especially great news for persons who are allergic to foundation.

2. Use a water based foundation. These come in liquids, as well as creams.

3. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking water.

4. If you must use a moisturizer, make sure that it is one that is a light formula, and only apply it to the areas of the face that need it.

5. Use an eye primer and top with powder before applying eyeshadow.

Choosing The Right Foundation

Foundations or bases, as they are sometimes called, are mainly used to even out the skin tone. They are silicone based, water based, oil based, and powder.

Modern day foundations are also infused with ingredients, e.g. spfs (sun-protecting factors), which help to protect and improve the quality and overall appearance of the skin, with use over time.

Foundation colors are also used for contouring and highlighting areas of the structure of the face. They range from sheer to full coverage. Sheer coverage foundations do not offer any coverage for skin imperfections.

Choosing the right color can be sometimes difficult and some people even find that they actually have to use more than one color to achieve their desired look. There's nothing wrong with that, since naturally skin is not just one color anyway! There are many brands on the market, so you have a variety from which to choose. It is very important that you be able to test before you purchase, especially with the more expensive ones.

How to choose the right color foundation for your skin tone?

1. Apply the foundation color to your jawline, the center of your forehead, and down the nose.

2. Use a well lit area to examine the color on the skin. If the color matches your skin tone on the face and the color of your neck, then it is the right one.

3. If you are meaning to cover a birthmark or a blemish in a particular area(s) of the face, you may want to use a concealer for this/those. Concealers are designed to be used in specific areas only, and not on the entire face, and should be a color that would completely cover (neutralize) the affected area. Concealers should not be lighter or darker than the area that you wish to cover.
